Book Review: Borrowed Sunshine by Ivy Emerson
Seeking approval desperately, Becky finds herself trapped in a dilemma without an exit strategy. Although a two-week vacation on Hilton Head Island might offer solace, Weston, also present, adds to her predicament. Weston, burdened by life’s hardships, had vowed to remain solitary and devoid of friendships. However, his well-crafted plan is disrupted due to Becky’s unexpected presence.
I received Borrowed Sunshine by Ivy Emerson as a gift, and let me tell you, it completely blew me away! It’s the second book in the Hilton Head Island Series, but you can totally read it as a standalone.
I devoured it on my Kindle, but now I’m seriously thinking about getting the paperback so I can annotate all my favorite parts. It’s that good!
Review of the book
Plot
Let’s talk about why this book has me totally hooked! First off, the plot – it’s like a perfectly brewed cup of coffee, hitting all the right notes at just the right time. Smooth, compelling, and keeps you wanting for more. And then, like any great love story, there’s the third act breakup.
You know, the one that makes you scream at the book, “Why, oh why?” But trust me on this, it’s a necessary evil. It’s like ripping off a bandaid, it stings, but it’s the only way our beloved characters can figure things out.
The whole premise of the book is so brilliantly thought out, it’s like stumbling upon a hidden treasure. So if you’re looking for a book that will make you laugh, swoon, and stay up way past your bedtime, this is the one!
Setting
Once again, we find ourselves transported to our beloved Hilton Head Island, where we’re granted front-row seats to our favorite characters’ coastal escapades. The sun-splashed beach scenes, courtesy of Ivy, make this book an absolute must for your summer reading list.
The setting couldn’t be more perfect, harmoniously enhancing the storyline and adding that extra touch of charm.
“Yes, you know, a hug. Everyone needs one occasionally.” “I don’t,” he replied, almost defensively. “Of course you do. Hugs are good for the soul. I don’t like all this animosity between us. A hug would make me feel better. My heart feels sad.”

Characters
The characters in this book truly came alive, and I couldn’t help but fall in love with the bond between Becky and Weston.
Their dynamic was so endearing, and their transformative journey brought such a vibrant spirit to the story.
Personally, I found their individual struggles incredibly relatable, and it created a deep connection as a reader. It was a powerful reminder of the unwavering grace and faithfulness that God bestows upon us.
The lively interactions and heartfelt dialogues among the characters only added to the charm, making it an absolutely delightful experience for us bookworms.
But Becky… she’d been like a ray of sunlight piercing through my carefully curated solitude, lighting up parts of my life I didn’t know existed.

Themes
The more I delved into this book, the more it felt like a journey, not just for the characters, but for me too. The strong faith theme throughout was like a beacon, illuminating both the plot and my personal reflections.
I watched as the characters, already Christians, deepened their relationship with God. It was like witnessing a beautiful dance of trust and surrender.
And even more touching was the theme of redemption woven through the pages – a reminder that it’s never too late to seek and find your identity in God. The book nudged me, and I think it would nudge anyone, believer or non-believer, to put trust in God.
It warmed my heart, and I dare say it might do the same for you.
Tropes
This book totally nailed some of my all-time favorite tropes, creating an absolutely irresistible combo of grumpiness and sunshine that had me hooked from start to finish.
The magnetic pull between the characters, despite being complete opposites, added that extra layer of complexity that made their journey all the more enchanting.
And let’s not forget the charming small town backdrop that set the stage for the sweetest romance.
Suddenly, I was back in the sunlight.

Writing Style
You can check out my previous post here about Kayak Girl, the first book in the Hilton Head Series, and you’ll see how much Ivy has grown since her first book.
Her writing style is still so unique, with an amazing ability to create conversations. It really draws you in as a reader and immerses you in the storyline.
In this second book, Borrowed Sunshine, I can see that the writing style is even cleaner and flows perfectly with each scene. As she continues to write more, I know she’ll develop her voice even further, making it even more outstanding than it already is!
My thoughts on Borrowed Sunshine by Ivy Emerson
Borrowed Sunshine by Ivy Emerson made me fall in love with reading all over again, earning an easy 5/5 stars in my book. The characters were so vivid, so real, that they leaped right off the page and into my heart. The sweet, heart-tugging romance was the cherry on top, making this book an absolute joy to read.
The strong faith themes woven into the contemporary romance narrative got me thinking, and that’s part of what I love about reading – when a book can entertain you and prompt self-reflection at the same time.
I wholeheartedly recommend Borrowed Sunshine to anyone looking for a contemporary romance that will make you laugh, swoon, and reflect – all in good measure.
